Does this sound familiar?

Signs your back pain needs a specialist.

If two or more of these apply to you, a pain physician can help find the cause — and treat it without surgery.

Common causes

What causes back pain?

Herniated or bulging disc

A disc presses on a nearby nerve, often causing pain that travels into the leg.

Sciatica

Irritation of the sciatic nerve causing shooting pain from the low back into the buttock and leg.

Spinal stenosis

Narrowing of the spinal canal that squeezes nerves, often worse when standing or walking.

Facet joint arthritis

Wear in the small joints along the spine, causing stiffness and pain when leaning back or twisting.

SI joint dysfunction

Inflammation where the spine meets the pelvis, felt in the low back and buttock.

Degenerative disc disease

Discs lose height and cushioning with age, leading to ongoing low back pain.

Muscle strain & spasm

Overworked or injured muscles that tighten into painful knots.

Not sure which one you have?

Your physician will pinpoint the cause at your first visit.

Treatment options

Non-surgical treatments for back pain.

Your physician recommends the right option after an exam. Many patients pair a procedure with physical therapy for longer-lasting results.

Epidural Steroid Injections

Best for sciatica and pain from a herniated disc or stenosis. Anti-inflammatory medicine is placed around the irritated nerve root under live X-ray guidance.

Facet Joint Injections & Medial Branch Blocks

For arthritis-type back pain that’s worse when you twist or lean back. A block also shows whether radiofrequency ablation can give longer relief.

Takes

15–30 minutes

Downtime

Usually back to normal activity the next day

Radiofrequency Ablation

Quiets the small nerves that carry pain from arthritic spinal joints. When a block has helped, RFA can extend relief for many months.

Takes

30–60 minutes

Downtime

Mild soreness for a few days

SI Joint Injections

Takes

15–20 minutes

Downtime

Most people return to activity the next day

FAQ

Back Pain questions.

Our team is happy to walk you through your options.

No. Your physician will examine you first and order imaging only if it’s needed. We have X-ray and motion X-ray in the office. If you already have an MRI report, please bring it.

If your back pain lasts more than two weeks, spreads into your leg, or keeps you from sleeping or working, it’s time to be seen. Go to the ER for loss of bladder or bowel control or sudden leg weakness.

Many people with sciatica improve with non-surgical care such as epidural steroid injections and physical therapy. Your physician will recommend the right option after your exam.

It varies. Some patients feel relief within days that lasts for months. If an injection helps, it can be repeated or combined with therapy.

Most back pain does not require surgery. We focus on non-surgical treatment first and will tell you honestly if a surgical opinion makes sense.

Many treatments are covered by most major plans, and we check your benefits for free before your visit. Car accident injuries may be covered under Florida PIP. We do not participate in Medicaid plans.
